Timber floating system at Untra
Until the early 70's, floating of timber was common in Sweden. Logs were transported from the woods in central Sweden to the saw and paper mills at the coast, using the natural flow of rivers. Around power stations and other obstacles, log flumes were built. The flume between Untra and Bomhus was first completed in 1898 to supply the new saw mill (operated by Korsnäs AB) in Bomhus. Later, the many dams built for hydroelectric power plants meant that the log flume had to be extended. The second generation (pictured) was completed in 1951. It was 34km long and crossed several lakes on its way. Today it is no longer used for timber, but it still supplies process water to Korsnäs.
